Atlanta Public Transportation: MARTA

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) provides public transportation throughout the greater Atlanta area by both bus and train. If you are arriving in Atlanta via the airport, you can get to GSU by taking the red or gold line from the Airport towards dowtown Atlanta, and stopping at Five Points

The most convenient method of using MARTA is to purchase a Breeze Card, which can be used anywhere MARTA runs. Simply choose your preferred number of rides, pay, and go! Once you are hired at GSU, the University also has discount programs available to faculty, staff, and students.

MARTA also has its new Streetcar available in downtown Atlanta, with a GSU stop at Hurt Park. This fun, easy ride gets you out of the campus, and to some neat sight-seeing opportunities like Centennial Olympic Park. Below are some of the Atlanta attractions that can by reached by bus or tain.

Three Big Universities in the Greater Atlanta Area

Along with Georgia State University, Atlanta has Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology all within a 7 mile radius. This means that working at GSU, you could foster many new connections and collaborations. Emory is a private medical university, and Georgia Tech is known for its engineering disciplines.

Finding an Apartment

Finding an apartment in any city can be challenging. Luckily, in Atlanta there is a free service that can help you narrow down the choices called Promove. They provide friendly and thorough advice on which areas are safe to live in, and which apartments are having a deal. They help you narrow down the choices based on your budget, family situation, and where you work -- you have to drive yourself around though, and make the final decision.

GSU ID & Parking Permits

The University-wide identification system requires you to have a Panther Card. It allows you access to your office building, and acts as your library card. To get the Panther Card, you will have to go to Auxiliary and Support Services 7-10 business days after your hiring paper work has been processed.

GSU Parking permits are also processed by Auxiliary and Support Services. The Budget Card option will result in $3.50 per parking entrance.

SWEET AUBURN MARKET

The Sweet Auburn Market is a great place to go on your own for a quick bite, or with a large group of people. This market place has many options in one place, so everyone can find something that will entice the senses.

International Scholars

Attracting bright young minds from around the world is a goal of GSU, and will help in its effort to become one of the top research Universities of the nation. For an international scholar, some extra paperwork is required to be able to work in the U.S., which the International Student & Scholar Services can help you with.

Explore Atlanta and Georgia: Featured Spot

If you enjoy hiking and nature, you are sure to enjoy Amicalola Falls. This State Park costs $5 per car to enter, is located approximately 1.5 hours north of Atlanta by car, and features Georgia's tallest waterfall. The 829 acre park has plenty of hiking trails, camping spots, areas to picnic, a Mountain-View Restaurant, and a Visitor Center, complete with Gift shop.

You can make Amicalola a whole day trip, or spend a few hours there and pass on to Helen, GA, which is set up as an Alpine Bavarian town. Enjoy some yummy German food and a beer, or walk the main street for a unique shopping experience.

In the other direction are the Georgia apple orchards in Elijay, GA. If you happen to be here in October, try to stop by for the Elijay Apple Festival. It sure is a blast!
